Terminology

In case you’re new to online gaming and the terminology that many players use, I’ve put together a little sheet explaining what many of these terms use.  I’ll most likely only be putting up very general terms and terms that I use.  Other terms, such as NHAA, are special to only specific games, but I will be sure to let you know what those terms mean when I post a review about a specific game.  Remember, due to the impatience of many gamers, they will try to abbreviate words as much as possible.  This may mean leaving out vowels or other “unimportant” letters, so when you see a word that you’re unfamiliar with, just read it the way it looks, and you’ll most likely understand.

Just a helpful tip, due to the impatience of many gamers and the short span of time to get the message across to the other player, many gamers use abbreviated words for things.  If you stumble across a word that you’re not sure what it means, before writing it off as a typo, try reading the word for how it looks, and you’ll most likely discover which word it is.  Don’t worry, as time progresses, you’ll soon pick out which words mean what and you’ll be using the terminology, too.

List:
Newbie – A player who is new to a game, usually describing a person who doesn’t know anything about anything.  If you are described with this word, most likely it’s derogatory.  Rarely is this word used in a positive or constructive way, but only in a way to bring another person down.  If you’re new to a game and are being called this, don’t worry.  You really don’t know what you’re doing, and thus shouldn’t worry about it.

Pwn – Other forms are “pwned,” “pwnt,” and other words involving “pwn” at the beginning.  It means to utterly crush and wreak havoc upon in the most extreme way.  Usually when one team beats another, the losing team got “pwned.”  It’s been said that this term was derived when a very powerful player in World of Warcraft killed a small player.  Although he meant to say “owned,” he missed the “o” key, and accidentally pressed the “p” key, resulting in “pwned.”  The term has stuck.

Thx – Meaning “thanks.”

NP – No problem.

LOL – Laughing out loud.  Other forms of this are:
ROFL- Rolling on Floor Laughing, and
LMAO- Laughing My *** Off
These are pretty self-explanatory.

MMORPG – Literally, Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.  This tag can refer to just about every FOMG I have on my <a href=”http://www.squidoo.com/freeonlinemultiplayergames”>game list</a>.

MMORTS – Massively Multiplayer Online Real-Time Strategy.  Refers to such games as Age of Empires, and games like that where war is being held in real-time.

If you are a gamer and know of some universal words that are used, please feel free to comment here and let me know of them.  I would be most appreciative of any additional information.
